Mortality from COVID has decreased in Moscow

Mortality from coronavirus in November in Moscow decreased by 11% compared to October, the press service of the city's health department said.

"Compared to the previous month, mortality from COVID-19 as a primary or co-cause reduced by 11%," the report said, citing statistics for November.

The department reminded that a set of measures was introduced in Moscow to contain the spread of coronavirus infection: a large-scale vaccination against coronavirus has started in the city, systems for mass testing for coronavirus infection, CT diagnostics, outpatient treatment and free medications supply operation have been launched, and a redundant hospital network has been deployed to treat coronavirus in a hospital setting, the report said.

The mortality rate from coronavirus in Moscow for the entire period of the epidemic, according to the Department of Health, is currently at 2.23 percent, taking into account only cases when COVID-19 was the primary cause of death.

In November 2020 in Moscow, according to operational data, 14,456 deaths were registered (4,730 more than in November 2019). “The excess of mortality in relation to the average November for the last three years amounted to 4 thousand 696 cases (9 thousand 637 in 2017, 9 thousand 918 in 2018, 9 thousand 726 in 2019). COVID-19 as the main or concomitant cause of death was noted in 4,542 cases, which accounts for 97 percent of all excess deaths in November,” the department informed.

According to the Department of Health, 3,418 people died from coronavirus as the main cause of death in November, including those cases when the coronavirus was named as the cause of death, either with a negative test both during life and posthumously, or according to the results of a postmortem examination and analysis of clinical symptoms. Those were 489 people. Thus, everyone, even the controversial cases, are classified as COVID-19-related.

“In November, there was an increase in the number of new cases of coronavirus. For comparison, in October, on average 4,244 new cases were detected per day, and in November - already 6,000. 53. On average, 43 percent more new cases were detected in November than in October. Despite a significant increase in the incidence, the proportion of deaths increased slightly - from 1.7 percent in October to 1.9 percent in November. That is, by only 0.2 percent, ”the message said.

The agency noted that the coronavirus infection exacerbates other diseases that can lead to death. So, 1,124 people died from other reasons but with a positive test for coronavirus in November. COVID had a significant impact on the development of the underlying disease and its fatal complications in 188 cases.

Over the past 24 hours, 27,002 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Russia. In total, more than 3.1 million cases of the disease were registered in the country.
