Russia establishes a new Navy support base in Sudan

The establishment of a logistic support base for the Russian Navy in Sudan meets the goals of maintaining peace and stability in the region. This does not imply any aggression against any state, said the Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin.

"The top military leadership of the host country is in favor of expanding military and military-technical ties with the Russian Federation, emphasizing its readiness to maintain continuity in relations with Russia, and reaching the strategic level of cooperation," he told the Rossiyskaya Gazeta, commenting on the establishment of the facility in Sudan.

According to Mr. Fomin, Russia is interested in a military presence in the region in order to fight terrorism, piracy, human trafficking, and smuggling of weapons and drugs. "Russia's goal is also to support safe commercial shipping", he added.
